Slice
the top off the onion
Take
a whole onion and slice off the pointy top part,
leaving the root end intact.
Cut
in half and peel off skin
Cut
the onion in half through the root, then peel
off the papery skin.
Make
a series of cuts through the onion
With
the root end of the onion half facing away from
you, make a series of fine lengthwise cuts,
avoiding cutting the root. Repeat with the other
onion half.
Make
a series of fine crosswise cuts through each
onion half until you reach the root. It will
fall onto the chopping board neatly diced.
Sliced
instead of diced onion
Onion
slices are great in salads, sandwiches and burgers,
and when you cook onion slices they caramelize
easily. To cut the onion into slices, simply
follow steps 1 and 2 but instead of making a
series of lengthwise cuts at step 3, make a
series of fine crosswise cuts and the onion
will fall away into half-rings.
